KC Approve HUU DNA Test
*Kennel Club Approve HUU DNA Test*
The Kennel Club has officially approved the DNA testing scheme for hyperuricosuria (HUU) in the Giant Schnauzer, and have added the test to the Breed Health Standard ‘Best Practice’.
If you’ve already had your Giant HUU DNA tested you can now send the results to the KC for officially recording.
Email test certificates to: health.results@thekennelclub.org.uk
Data from Laboklin shows 36% of Giant Schnauzers carry the HUU mutation, therefore it is important to test before breeding to know which dogs are carriers, and be able to breed safely. If you haven’t tested it’s not possible to know!
The DNA test can prevent puppies from being affected by this mutation.
In affected dogs an excessive amount of uric acid forms crystals leading to kidney/bladder stones, a blockage can cause straining to urinate, vomiting, loss of appetite, and weakness, due to toxins building up in the body, and may require surgical removal.
Dogs that inherit two copies of the gene mutation (one from each parent) have an increased risk of developing the condition.
We have a discount voucher with Laboklin for their Giant Schnauzer DNA test bundle: prcd-PRA, HUU, DCM, PRA5 & DM contact bhc@giantschnauzerhealth.org.uk for more info.
